Geological Time and Fossils

KCK401- Understanding of geologic time and how evidence is used to interpreted and reconstruct events.

I can statements:

1.  Compare absolute and relative age, understand the laws associated with relative age of rock formation and explain how half-life is used to determine actual age. (Uniformitarism & Superposition)

      a.  State the theory of uniformitarism

      b.  Explain how the law of superposition can be used to determine the relative age of rocks.

2.  Relate geologic changes to major events including extinction and ice ages.

3.  Explain how different types of fossils are formed, and the importance of index fossils?

4.  Relate the geologic time scale to major geological events. (Kansas Geological Time Scale)

      a.  List the eons, eras, periods and epochs of the geological time scale.

      b.  Explain why scientists change from one to another, what happened in Earths history.

5.  Explain how the process of radioactive decay can be used to determine the absolute age of rocks.
